The origins of the Rucksack

· ·

The word rucksack comes from German language, "rucken" meaning back and “sack” meaning bag, and its history traces back to Alpine communities. Made from hides or linen, early rucksacks were essential for shepherds and mountaineers navigating rugged terrain.

Military use refined the design. Adding structure, pockets, and durable materials like canvas and leather. These innovations laid the groundwork for the modern backpack.

Post–World War II, outdoor adventurers embraced the rucksack, and brands began creating purpose-built packs for hiking and travel. Today, waxed canvas rucksacks blend that rugged utility with timeless style, perfect for both trail and city life.

Simple, durable, and steeped in heritage, the rucksack is more than a bag - it’s a symbol of adventure.
